  15. <p>     DIED. Jacques Soustelle, 78, World War II Free French
  16. patriot and leader in the underground movement against Algerian
  17. independence from France; in the Paris suburb of
  18. Neuilly-sur-Seine. During World War II, General Charles de
  19. Gaulle named Soustelle, a multilingual anthropologist, chief
  20. of the Free French intelligence service in the fight to
  21. liberate France from Nazi occupation. In the late 1950s, while
  22. serving as Governor-General in Algeria and Minister of
  23. Information under De Gaulle, Soustelle became a champion of
  24. French sovereignty over Algeria. He quit his government posts
  25. in 1959, allegedly to help direct a clandestine organization,
  26. the Secret Army, in two aborted coups against the De Gaulle
  27. government because of its move toward Algerian independence.
  28. Three years later, after being charged with "attempts against
  29. the state," Soustelle fled France. He spent six years in exile,
  30. mostly in Switzerland, before returning home following a
  31. general amnesty for those involved in the Algerian dispute.
